Registering a .NP domain is free through Nepal’s official registry, but approval depends on choosing a name that legitimately relates to you or your organization, submitting acceptable identification and providing correct DNS details. A cover letter helps explain the request; it does not reserve or register the domain automatically.
Use the free CodeDeb .NP cover letter generator to prepare a draft request letter, then submit the application yourself through the official .NP registry.
Who can apply?
The registry accepts eligible Nepalese citizens, local companies and organizations, and qualifying foreign organizations with the required registered presence or documentation in Nepal. Personal domain names should be based on the applicant’s name as it appears on acceptable identity documents. Organizations should be able to show how the requested domain is connected to their registered name, brand, product or service.
Being eligible does not automatically mean a particular name will be approved. The registry reviews both the requested name and the supporting documents.
What documents should you prepare?
- Personal application: An accepted identity document, such as Nepalese citizenship, passport, driving licence, voter card, eligible NRN identification or applicable residence documentation. Confirm the exact requirements for your category before uploading.
- Company or organization: Company, firm, partnership or organization registration documents that establish the entity and the requested name’s connection.
- Organization request letter: An official request on the organization’s letterhead with the authorized signature and company stamp where required.
- Technical details: Correct nameserver hostnames such as
ns1.example.comandns2.example.com. An IP address alone is not a valid nameserver entry.
Additional documentation may be required for foreign entities or requests based on trademarks and services. Consult the registry’s official registration instructions.
Register step by step
- Choose a relevant domain. Verify that the name reflects your identity, company, brand, product or service. Avoid unrelated dictionary words and names that you cannot substantiate.
- Choose an eligible .NP extension.
.com.npis broadly used, while other endings may be restricted. Read the extension comparison guide. - Check availability. Search on register.com.np and follow the registration workflow presented there.
- Create and verify your registry account. Supply a working email address and complete the account-verification instructions.
- Fill in the application. Enter the applicant, administrative contact, and valid nameserver details consistently with your documents.
- Attach supporting documents and your request letter. Ensure all uploaded copies are legible. For an organization, print the request on official letterhead and add the required authorization.
- Submit and monitor status. The registry checks eligibility and documentation, and may ask for additional information.
How long does approval take?
The registry’s FAQ says requests usually take approximately three to four business days or longer, depending on backlog and document verification. This is guidance, not a guaranteed approval time. Avoid paying third parties for domain registration without understanding what additional services they are charging for: registry registration itself is free.
Before submitting
Review your spelling, supporting identity or registration papers, the relationship between the domain and applicant, valid nameservers, and any required signature or stamp. See the common rejection checklist before uploading.
